Compost

I had no idea when I started this blog that I'd eventually end up posting a photo of what we normally throw away but here we are.

In an effort to homestead our small, suburban property our goals are to be as self-sufficient, resourceful and productive as we can be.

We need better soil. Period.
We have dreams of growing this place wild and free but that's not going to happen with non-nutritious dirt. Bagged compost can be really expensive. We have tons of kitchen and yard scraps though. And voila! We solved more than a few problems - get rid of trash without wasting it, not add to our already full landfills, and get free nutrition for our soil.

My Momma got this for us for Christmas - thank you!!!
I'm proud to already say that we have more compost than actual garbage or recyclables and Tessa knows exactly if something can go in the compost bowl.

It's a double-compartment rolling composter that allows you to start on a bath while keep adding to the other. That way something is always cooking and something is always available to add to.

We have way more kitchen scraps (mostly "greens") than I thought we would so we needed to balance it out with yard scraps ("browns") so the right mini ecosystem would develop and turn out trash into compost.

With the cold of winter I'm sure it'll take some time to get going but we are well on our way to compost!

Meet The Author

I’m Stephanie, the mind and Momma behind The Heirloom Family. I created this blog as a way to capture the magic of our family and the beauty of every day slow and simple living. I also hope it serves as an inspiration to you as well.

Nestled in our little corner of the Earth in Western New York, I am lucky enough to share my home with my husband and our daughter, along with 4 cheerful cats.

We strive for a wholesome life, one that is slow and steady. I want to breathe it in, this time we have, and I might just be lucky enough to see the magic in it all.

There are so many things in life that I love – nature. crochet. photography. gardening. cooking. faith. honey. reading. sunsets and sunrises. flowers. ballet. enchantment. Dave Matthews Band. the moon. rainbows. babywearing. lavender and sandalwood. celebrations. music. hippie. poetry. love. the forest. romantic history. cats. dreamcatchers. wool. heritage. family. lilac. red wine. memories.
