Dyngus Day

Dyngus Day is a Polish holiday in which celebrates the end of Lenten (fasting) season. This interest in this Polish celebration has grown over the past five years or so in Western new York and is now said to be celebrated more here in the USA than Poland.

Traditionally boys spray girls with water and tap them with pussywillow branches on the Monday after Easter while girls get their revenge on Tuesday. It's a free-spirited celebration that bring some great pride for Polish Americans.

These are the gorgeous pussywillows I got from The Broadway Market on Good Friday.

We started our day off with a visit to Corpus Christi Church where my Momma went to school and where we were baptized.

This church is amazingly beautiful!

We waited for the parade to begin and had to snap a few pictures in our red and white.

And show off the belly...?

Aren't the costumes of heritage fantastic?

Tessa did such a great job waving her pussywillow branch, cheering on the parade!

Nothing is better than a Polish parade. They throw candy for the kids... and kielbasa, butter and cheese curds. Happy Dyngus Day!

I’m Stephanie, the mind and Momma behind The Heirloom Family. I created this blog as a way to capture the magic of our family and the beauty of every day slow and simple living. I also hope it serves as an inspiration to you as well.

Nestled in our little corner of the Earth in Western New York, I am lucky enough to share my home with my husband and our daughter, along with 4 cheerful cats.

We strive for a wholesome life, one that is slow and steady. I want to breathe it in, this time we have, and I might just be lucky enough to see the magic in it all.

There are so many things in life that I love – nature. crochet. photography. gardening. cooking. faith. honey. reading. sunsets and sunrises. flowers. ballet. enchantment.
